We are thrilled that you have chosen to become part of our discipleship learning community.

One of the first things we hope you will discover is that all of us – facilitators and students – are here for the same reason:  To become encouraged, edified, and equipped in our faith in order to engage the world around us with the Good News of Jesus Christ.  To that end, we look forward to seeing God do that good work in your life as you go deeper in your discipleship to Jesus and grow in Christlikeness.

Discipleship: Participating in God’s Story by Bill Clem

In partnership with the Western Seminary Center for Leadership Development

  • Course Start Date: July 5 (7-weeks)
  • Tuesdays; 6:30pm-8pm; Reliance Campus

Followers of Jesus are those who have embraced His Person and His work as lived out in His earthly ministry, His sacrificial death on the cross, His conquering of death through His resurrection and His offering of life eternal to those who believe. And for those who believe . . . saved by His grace . . . there is a calling . . . the calling of discipleship . . . become a disciple and make disciples.

This series is about both becoming and making. Of embracing the grace of God’s saving offer through His Son Jesus and the stewardship of carrying that grace through His image, lived out in us, to those He is yet to call into relationship with Himself. For the saved, imaging Christ becomes a central privilege and duty of life through which, they fulfill these crucial last injunctions of Jesus before His return to the Father.

Foundations in Biblical Worldview by Derek Hiebert

  • Course Start Date: July 5 (6-weeks)
  • Tuesdays; 6:30pm-8pm; Reliance Campus

Your worldview—how you understand and experience all of life and reality—is one of the most important things about you. It affects virtually every aspect of your life. As such, the Christian worldview is formed by the powerful, all-consuming story of the Bible. This course discusses the concepts of worldview and story, and how these two realities are brought together in shaping a person’s whole outlook on reality, influencing the way they live and experience everyday life. As well, the concepts of religious pluralism and dualism—key aspects of contemporary secular culture—will be discussed.

This is an introductory course, with brief technical analysis in various parts. Attention is given as well to implications for the church and discipleship. Each Session contains a 20-25 minute video lecture, along with notes and discussion questions. Some visuals are provided on a white-board in the videos, which you can emulate in the extra space in the notes, as well as your own note-taking.

Q:  What is a “discipleship learning community”?

A discipleship learning community is one of the many discipleship pathways here at Reliance Church.  It provides a structure to help people grow deeper in their faith and become more faithful followers of Jesus.  The discipleship learning community allows individuals to work out their theology in a group setting and provides accountability.

Q:  Who are Reliance Courses for?

Reliance Courses are for individuals who want to grow and be equipped as disciples of Jesus in order to live out the Gospel in practical ways in their families, schools, and workplaces.

Q:  Do Reliance Courses meet year-round?

Reliance Courses currently only meet during the summer months and plans are in the works to offer weekend intensive courses/seminars throughout the year.

Q:  Is there an age requirement in order to register for a Course?

While there is not a formal age requirement in order to register, there is a certain level of spiritual, social, and academic maturity that will be expected.  Generally speaking, most course material and discussions will be appropriate for high school students and up.

Q:  Do you offer online courses?

We believe in the power and growth that comes from gathering in-person for Reliance Courses and for that reason, courses are not available online.

Q:  Do you have to be a member of Reliance Church to participate in a Course?

Reliance Courses are primarily for our members, but membership is not a requirement.

Q:  What do Reliance Courses look like week-to-week?

Each week, students will be required to attend the weekly class on Tuesday nights from 6:30pm-8pm.  Students will turn in class notes and complete weekly quizzes.  Group discussions will play a vital role in helping students understand and the material.

Q:  What if I have to miss one of the in-person gatherings?

We understand the occasional need to miss a weekly gathering, but all students who miss a weekly gathering will be required to contact the Course Facilitator ahead of time and watch that week’s lecture on their own time, providing the required notes and completing the weekly quiz by the following weekly gathering.

Q:  How much does it cost to participate in a Reliance Course?

Each Course has a $15 Registration Fee.  If a Course is book-based, the book is included with the Registration Fee.

Q:  Is childcare an option?

Unfortunately, we are not able to offer childcare at this time.

Grow in your love and knowledge of God in the context of community.

Mike Bennett

Michael Anthony Bennett was born and raised in Long Beach, CA.  Mike received Jesus as his Lord and Savior around the age of 17.  After a few years growing in his faith he felt the call into pastoral ministry.  In 2008 he began attending Calvary Chapel Bible College because of their strict emphasis on Bible Exposition, eventually graduating with a Bachelors in Biblical Studies.

Mike met his wife Alyssa at CCBC.  They got married in May 2013 and three days later moved to Costa Rica as missionaries.  In the summer of 2014 they accepted the invitation for Mike to take a senior pastor position at a Calvary Chapel in North Carolina.  They spent five of their favorite years there loving on that church body before submitting to God’s leading to move back to Murrieta to be a helping hand to their extended families that live in the area.

Mike loves that Reliance Church is committed to studying God’s word and he is excited to see how God might use him and his passion to help the body of Christ cultivate “love from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith” (1 Tim 1:5) through growing in our knowledge of the Bible.  His hobbies outside of ministry include lifting weights, listening to music, and spending time outdoors with his family.  Mike and Alyssa have two amazing kids, Jadon and Ellie.

Jared holds a bachelor’s degree in bioengineering and has taken coursework at Calvary Chapel Bible College and Biola University’s Talbot School of Theology.
